Patience is Beautiful - الصبر جميل

I am not a patient person. Even growing up, my parents said I always wanted to be one step (or a few steps) ahead, when it came to school, sports, even my age ( but after I hit 25, I was done wanting to get ahead in age). It’s no surprise that my impatience holds true now with work. This past year has been very awkward. I’ve felt out of place, lost, unsure of the next step, which is odd, because I’m usually so sure of myself.  Uncertainty isn’t a good feeling.

A particular friend in Yemen was always good at reminding me - الصبر جميل - “Patience is beautiful”. I should know by now, that it takes hard work and quite often, suffering to achieve anything; (running and racing being the perfect example) nothing good comes without time, without patience, and without a price.

Getting to know North Minneapolis

Just before the holidays, I had an assignment with the New York Times in North Minneapolis, for this story by John Eligon. Aside from a few visits when friends of mine lived there years ago, I had never really explored the neighborhoods of North, or gotten to know the people there, which is why this assignment was so enjoyable. I love Minneapolis (ok, ok, you too St. Paul), and getting to know people who make this community truly strong was heartening.

Pine Ridge

I spent last weekend, including my birthday, with a lovely family on Pine Ridge in Kyle, SD.

A work in progress, and it means I’m all the more excited to come out again later in the year.

Thank you all for making me feel welcomed, and I’m hoping to see you again soon.
